Seminal books
This list identifies the books that most shaped how humans understand reality, organize society, build institutions, and interpret themselves. The Core 100 ranks the seminal books of history across disciplines, selected for foundationality, explanatory power, durability, historical importance, cross-domain transfer, and generalist value. The Extended Canon then adds further seminal works across 22 subjects — 468 books in total.
The value of the list is compression. It reduces an effectively infinite reading universe into a finite map of the books and ideas most worth knowing, while preserving enough structure to go deeper by subject. The Core 100 provides a general intellectual foundation, and the subject canons provide the next layer of depth. Whether read sequentially or used as a reference, the goal is the same: maximize the amount of durable knowledge, useful models, and historical context acquired per book read.
