On openness

Exploring the effects of variation in novelty appetite across creativity and culture

Openness is the raw material the other two work on — the appetite for novelty and ideas. Intellect works that material; conscientiousness ships it. Curiosity is not smartness, and it is not finish. More isn’t always better.

Openness supplies the raw material. It does not refine it, and it does not guarantee you ship.

Curiosity is a gift. Closed minds miss art, science, and second chances — the book they never open, the field they never enter, the person they write off too early. The trait earns its reputation for creativity honestly: open people notice more possibilities, tolerate more ambiguity, and generate more unusual associations than the rest of us. That is real. Concede it fully. Then keep going. The same appetite that feeds good work also overshoots into fake patterns, declines with age, and now reaches first for a tool that makes everyone’s output look more alike. A gift is still something you have to use — and sometimes refuse.

Restless by design

Openness to experience is the Big Five trait for wanting new things — new ideas, new aesthetics, new ways of seeing. The Revised NEO inventory measures it across fantasy, aesthetics, feelings, actions, ideas, and values. Those six facets collapse into two broader aspects that are correlated but genuinely distinct: an ideas half (Intellect) — engagement with abstract information, reasoning, intellectual curiosity — and an aesthetic/imaginative half (Openness) — sensitivity to perception, fantasy, beauty, and emotion1.

Colloquial talk collapses those halves into one flattering word: open-minded. The data does not. People high on the ideas half argue for fun, chase theories, and stay late with a hard problem. People high on the aesthetic half get moved by a painting, a song, a city they have never visited. Both are “open.” They are not the same person, and they do not predict the same outcomes.

Novelty appetite is not the same thing as being smart. When both aspects are entered together as predictors of cognitive ability, only the ideas half carries an independent relationship to general intelligence. Once that contribution is removed, the aesthetic and imaginative half keeps a link mainly to verbal ability — and is basically unrelated to fluid or nonverbal IQ2. Treat the label as one thing and you will confuse curiosity for capacity, or confuse taste for intellect. Restlessness is the design. Smart is a different axis. The Monday mistake is hiring — or grading yourself — as if appetite for novelty were a proxy for either.

Fuel for creative work

Openness’s most replicated finding is about creative achievement. Gregory Feist’s 1998 meta-analysis of 83 studies found openness the strongest personality predictor of creative achievement in both artists and scientists — larger among artists (d0.47) than scientists (d0.31)3. The gap tracks the aspect split: the aesthetic/imaginative half predicts creative achievement in the arts; the ideas half predicts it in the sciences4. That is not a metaphor. Different halves of the trait light up different domains of creative work.

The same disposition shows up where the map is unfinished. Openness is among the most consistent personality correlates of entrepreneurial intention and behavior — tied to tolerance for ambiguity and a documented tendency to generate more distant, unusual associations between ideas. If the job is to invent the category, or to live inside one that keeps changing, this trait is fuel. If the job is to run the same playbook cleanly every Tuesday, it is not.

Its footprint on ordinary job performance is narrower — and narrower than conscientiousness’s. Barrick and Mount’s 1991 meta-analysis — the same study that established conscientiousness’s broad validity across occupations — found openness predicted only training proficiency, at roughly 0.25, with no meaningful validity for job proficiency once people were trained5. Open people learn new material somewhat faster. That does not reliably mean they do the job better afterward. Use the trait as a hiring signal for roles that need novelty, ambiguity, and generative thinking. Do not use it as a substitute for follow-through. Each of the three traits covers ground the others do not; lean on only one and you will systematically miss what the other two measure.

Politics is correlation, not destiny

Openness is also the most consistent Big Five predictor of political orientation. A meta-analysis of 232 samples and more than 575,000 people found openness the strongest negative correlate of political conservatism among the Big Five, at r−0.1456. Modest in absolute terms. Unusually consistent across countries, decades, and instruments — the kind of finding that survives the replication graveyard most personality-and-ideology claims fall into. Plenty of highly open people hold conservative views. Plenty of closed people do not. The authors’ own framing is the right one: “reliable, but non-causal.” The correlation replicates. Nothing in the design of these studies establishes that a disposition toward novelty causes a politics, rather than the two developing together, or environments shaping how the trait shows up.

Conscientiousness tends to mirror the opposite pattern on average — more conservative identification where openness leans liberal — which fits a broader reading in which the two traits pull in opposite directions on questions of social change and tradition. Still not destiny for any individual.

Do not moralize a correlation. Treating openness as virtue and closedness as vice — or the reverse — is politics dressed up as personality science. A population average is not a character verdict. The useful move is simpler: notice the association, refuse the destiny story, and judge people’s politics on their politics.

The failure mode is fake patterns

The same appetite for unusual associations that feeds creative work can overshoot. A mind tuned to notice connections other people miss is, by definition, more exposed to noticing connections that are not there — seeing patterns that aren’t real. DeYoung’s account of Openness/Intellect places the trait on a spectrum with general intelligence at one end and unusual beliefs and perceptions — at the ordinary end of the psychosis spectrum — at the other. The two poles load on a related dimension even though they correlate negatively with each other7. Recent factor-analytic work finds a “schizotypal thinking” factor built from relatively common odd beliefs, moderately to strongly associated with several openness facets: absorption, aesthetic appreciation, fantasy, openness to innovation7.

This is not “open people are sick.” The link is to ordinary variation in belief and perception, not diagnosis. Most highly open people show no elevated psychopathology of any kind. It is the closest openness comes to conscientiousness’s perfectionism problem: the same mechanism that produces the celebrated outcome — meticulous execution there, imaginative pattern-finding here — becomes a liability at the tail. Creative insight and false pattern are neighbors. Pretending they live in different neighborhoods is how you stop noticing when you have crossed the street.

The practical tell is simple. When unusual associations start paying rent — art that works, science that predicts, a business model that survives contact with customers — you are on the useful side of the line. When the associations only convince you, and resist every attempt at disconfirmation, you have crossed it. Openness does not come with a built-in referee. Judgment is the referee. Finish is the other one.

It declines with age — and there’s a sharp lever

Openness does not follow conscientiousness’s steady rise through adulthood. A large meta-analysis of personality change across the lifespan found openness rises modestly early, then declines roughly 0.5 standard deviations by around age 80 — the opposite of the maturity principle that lifts conscientiousness through the twenties and thirties8. People get, on average, more disciplined with age. They also get, on average, less hungry for novelty. That is not a moral story. It is a trajectory.

The decline is not only cosmetic. In a longitudinal twin-and-adoption aging study, steeper late-life drops in openness predicted higher odds of death, independent of age9. Direction unclear: declining openness may be an early marker of the same neurological changes that shorten life, not a cause. Worth knowing anyway. Conscientiousness’s longevity signal is mostly about where you stand in midlife. Openness’s is about how fast you are losing ground late — a harder signal to act on in the moment.

Then the sharp lever. If conscientiousness moves through sustained practice, one of the only well-documented ways to shift openness in a stable adult is not behavioral at all. In a double-blind study of 52 hallucinogen-naive adults, those who had a complete mystical experience under psilocybin showed a substantial rise in measured openness afterward — still elevated at 16-month follow-up10. At the time, that was one of the only published demonstrations of a lasting personality-trait shift in healthy adults from a single intervention. Personality traits are otherwise stubborn past early adulthood. A 2025 systematic review of classic psychedelics and personality found the most consistent effect across the literature was an increase in openness, alongside reductions in neuroticism11.

Tone this the way you would any sharp pharmacological fact — not as lifestyle advice, not as romance. The claim is empirical: under controlled conditions, a sufficiently intense experience can move the trait in a lasting way. Set against the trilogy, the pattern is clean. IQ is largely fixed past childhood. Conscientiousness moves gradually through practice. Openness can take a discrete shift from one intense experience — and also declines on its own with age. Three traits. Three relationships to time. Do not confuse a laboratory finding with a prescription, and do not confuse caution with pretending the finding does not exist.

AI makes you more productive and everyone more similar

Who reaches for the novelty machine first — and what does it do to the novelty?

High-openness people. Openness is among the strongest personality predictors of generative-AI use; people curious about new tools reach for a new category of tool12. That is definitionally unsurprising. It is still consequential, because reach predicts exposure, and exposure predicts what happens next.

The individual benefit is real. In a controlled experiment, writers given GenAI story ideas produced work judged better-written and more enjoyable — with the largest gains among writers who were least creative to begin with — while GenAI-assisted stories were measurably more similar to one another than unassisted ones12. Mechanism is simple: the model draws on the same statistically common associations for everyone who asks it. You get speed and polish. The group gets convergence.

Individual creative gain. Collective homogenization. The novelty-seekers are most exposed to the homogenizing tool. That is the irony specific to this trait. Amplification for the person; narrowing for the group. Same shape the other two essays found for reasoning and follow-through — different punch line. If you use the tool to raise your standards of selection — generate broadly, keep only what is sharp — you keep the gain. If you use it as the default voice of what “interesting” sounds like, you quietly train yourself toward the statistical center. The question is not whether the tool is creative. It is whether you are still doing the selecting.

Decide: feed it, then constrain it

Do not maximize openness. Feed it when the work needs new material — new markets, new forms, new questions worth asking. Constrain it when you need judgment and finish — when pattern-seeking has started inventing rather than discovering, when another idea is cheaper than shipping the last one.

Three axes. Three levers. Three failure modes. Intellect sets what you can handle and barely moves past childhood. Conscientiousness governs whether you follow through and answers to practice. Openness governs the supply of ideas and aesthetic experience, can shift under intense experience, and declines with age. Very high intellect drifts into abstraction with nothing to check it. Very high conscientiousness curdles into rigid perfectionism. Very high openness sits closest to the line between insight and seeing patterns that aren’t there. The honest picture is not a hierarchy with one trait on top. It is a portfolio: ceiling, follow-through, and raw material — each with its own cost if you run it flat out. None of the three explains the others. None is dispensable. None is costless at the extreme.

The Monday question is not “how open can I become?” It is “does this week need new material — or judgment and finish?” Ask that before you chase another experience, another tool, another unfinished draft. Curiosity is the gift. Constraint is how the gift becomes work.
